The UN Youth Champions for Environment and Peace 2026 is the sixth edition of this flagship initiative designed to equip young people with knowledge, skills, and networks needed to develop joint environmental actions that contribute to peacebuilding and social cohesion. The programme focuses specifically on environmental peacebuilding and joint action on shared environmental concerns across Cyprus’s diverse communities.

Participation is completely free, and no previous experience in environmental or peacebuilding work is required. The programme is designed for young people who are passionate about contributing to a peaceful and sustainable future on the island, regardless of their background or prior involvement in these fields.

3. What Participants Will Do

Selected Youth Champions participate in intensive, immersive workshops and collaborative activities designed to develop practical environmental leadership and peacebuilding skills.

Workshop Schedule:

• October 3, 2026 – First workshop day at Ledra Palace
• October 4, 2026 – Second workshop day at Ledra Palace
• October 10, 2026 – Third workshop day at Ledra Palace
• October 11, 2026 – Fourth workshop day at Ledra Palace

Workshop Location:

• All workshops held at Ledra Palace in the UN buffer zone in Nicosia
• Accommodation may be available during workshop weekends for participants unable to commute (limited and subject to confirmation)

Workshop Activities:

• Interactive sessions and discussions on environmental and peacebuilding issues
• Group work developing environmental action ideas
• Support from programme staff, environmental experts, peacebuilding practitioners and youth activists
• Networking with other young people from across Cyprus and different communities
• Skill development in confidence, adaptability, critical thinking, inclusive leadership and collaboration

Post-Workshop Activities:

• Teams refine environmental action ideas after workshops
• Simple proposal submission for environmental action project
• Implementation of team’s environmental action by February 2027
• Mentoring and expert support during implementation phase
• Closing event at end of March 2027 (mandatory attendance)

4. Environmental Action Grants

A key feature of the programme is that each selected team receives funding to implement its environmental action project.

Grant Details:

• Grant Allocation: Each selected team receives a small grant to implement its environmental action
• Implementation Timeline: Environmental actions must be implemented by February 2027
• Mentoring Support: Teams receive mentoring and expert support during implementation
• Reach Requirement: Proposed activities should reach people across the divide and community lines
• Cross-Community Focus: Participants are strongly encouraged to develop initiatives that can operate across Cyprus

5. Eligibility Requirements

The programme welcomes applicants who meet the following criteria:

Core Eligibility Criteria:

• Age: Aged 18 to 30 years old
• Residency: From any community living in Cyprus
• Motivation: Strongly motivated to contribute to a peaceful and sustainable future on the island
• Interest: Interested in environmental issues and peacebuilding

Commitment Requirements:

• Available and committed to attending all four workshop days (October 3, 4, 10, 11)
• Willing to actively participate in environmental action as part of a team
• Interested in developing relationships with participants from all communities in Cyprus

Other Requirements:

• Language: Able to communicate effectively in English
• Buffer Zone Access: Able to enter the UN buffer zone in Nicosia through relevant crossing points
• Documentation: Responsible for ensuring you have required documentation to access the buffer zone
• Prior Participation: Specifically intended for people who have not previously participated in a UN Youth Champions programme

What is NOT Required:

• Previous experience in environmental work is not required
• Previous experience in peacebuilding is not required
• Prior environmental activism or involvement is not necessary

6. Attendance & Commitment

Attendance at the programme is a significant commitment, and participants must carefully consider their ability to participate fully.

Mandatory Attendance:

• Attendance at all four workshop days is mandatory
• Attendance at closing event at end of March 2027 is mandatory
• Active contribution to team’s environmental action implementation is required
• Full compliance with attendance and participation requirements is necessary to receive the programme certificate

Important Consideration:

• Applicants should only apply if they can commit to the complete programme schedule
• October 3-4 and October 10-11 dates require full participation
• Work or study commitments that conflict with workshop dates may make participation impossible
