SEDarc represents a coordinated partnership of leading universities committed to training the next generation of social science researchers. The programme combines advanced research skills training with independent doctoral research within five interdisciplinary, challenge-led pathways designed to address major social, economic, environmental, institutional, and technological challenges facing society.
The studentships are available to both UK and international applicants. For successful overseas applicants, SEDarc institutions cover the difference between UK home and international tuition fees, with the important exception of the University of Reading, which does not provide this top-up support. Programme Duration

6. How to Apply
Applications to SEDarc involve a two-stage process: institutional nomination and SEDarc application. Students cannot apply directly to SEDarc without first being nominated by one of the six participating universities.
Select one of the six SEDarc universities. Identify your doctoral research interest and which of the five research pathways aligns with your work. Visit your chosen university’s doctoral research pages to explore current supervisors and research themes.
Reach out to your university’s SEDarc contact early—do not wait until January 2027. University contacts are provided below. Discuss your research interests, identify a potential supervisor, and clarify the institution’s application process and deadlines.
Each of the six universities has its own application process and institutional deadline, which precedes the SEDarc deadline. Follow your chosen university’s application procedure. Typical requirements include a research proposal, CV, academic references, and personal statement.
Once you complete the institutional application, the university will nominate you for a SEDarc studentship if your profile is strong. You cannot proceed to the SEDarc stage without institutional nomination.
After receiving institutional nomination, submit your SEDarc application through the official portal. The SEDarc deadline is 29 January 2027 at 16:00 GMT. Complete all required fields and ensure your application emphasizes how your research aligns with one of SEDarc’s five pathways.
